Boats
A delightful means of transport in the kingdom, except sometimes in Bangkok, where river and canal transport are still part of many people’s daily routines, making boats overly congested. The scale and intricacy of the canals are beyond the average resident’s comprehension. The chao phraya river ferry is the ideal mode of transport for visiting the sights of the old city. River boats travel on established routes along the Chao Phraya River to nearby provinces, or through the intricate canal system in the city. Fare depends on distance. There are piers near major commercial districts such as Sukhumvit and the World Trade Center. Long-tailed boats could be hired for special river tours.
Many islands are reached by ferry, but speedboats are increasingly common (as they are for one-day-tours, snorkeling and diving). Phuket, progressively ko samui and pattaya as well, are known internationally as first class yachting centers.
