About Chiang Mai

Chiang mai is blessed with stunning natural beauty and a unique indigenous cultural identity. Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai the Great, it was the capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom by merging the various city-states in the region, Chiang Mai is today the economic, communications, cultural and tourism centre of Northern Thailand, Thia pre-eminent regional status has been obtained without losing the essence of its natural environment and culture. The terrain consists mainly of mountainous jungles, parts of which are within fertile and verdant national parks full of all kinds of flora and fauna. Chiang Mai is also Thailand’s main centre for quality handicrafts. Artisans hone their art in the outlying villages where authentic cottage industrieds thrive. In particular, along the Bo Sang-San Kamphaeng Road, such handicraft-producing factories give visitors a glimpse of the traditional methods still in use today.

The province of Chiang Mai, located 700 kilometers north of Bangkok and served by both air and rail services from the capital, epitomizes the charm and attractions that typify northern Thailand.

Here you will discover a landscape of high forested hills and idyllic river valleys, while the cities, towns and villages of the region display a distinct culture arising from a long and separate history. At the same time, deluxe hotels and mountain resorts provide all modern comforts. The city of Chiang Mai, pleasantly situated on the banks of the Ping river, is a treasure trove of ancient temples, fascinating for their distinctive northern Thai architectural style and rich decorative detail, while on the outskirts is the famed hilltop temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. 1. Phu Phing Palace
This is on Doi Buak Ha , about 4 kms. from Doi Suthep. Phu Phing Palace is the winter Palace and open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as holidays, when the Thai Royal Family is not in residence. This is located on the same road, beyond Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, 22 kilometres from town.

2. Wat Phra Sing
It has the most complete version of Lanna chapel and is home to Phra Buddha Sihing, considered Chiang Mai's important and sacred Buddha mage. Wat Pra Sing is perhaps the largest and most interesting, although it may not seem so at first glance. The temple is located at the end of Pra Singh Road (what a coincidence) which nearly bisects the old city, running from the Tapae gate all the way to the temple, which is just inside of the Suan Dok gate.

3. Wat Phra Borommathat Doi Suthep
This is on Doi Suthep is a large golden pagoda in the center of the temple containing a part of the holy relics of the Lord Buddha. It is a holy spot visited throughout the year by Buddhist pilgrims from all over the world. This temple was built by King Gue-Na in 1383 A.D.You can get a songthaew (a small pickup truck with seats along the sides of the covered bed) from the small market area at the corner of Manneenopparat and Chotana Roads, just outside the Changpuak Gate. A round trip, including a visit to the Doi Pui Maeo village, runs around 150 Baht.

4. Wiang Kum Kam
This is and ancient town founded by King Mengrai. The main historical remains are: Wat Chedi Liam ,Wat Chang Kham, and chedi's bases at Wat Kum Kam-Wat Noi, etc. Wiang Kum Kam is located on Chian Mai - Lamphum Raod, 3-4 kms. from town in the area of Amphoe Saraphi.

5. Wat Suan Dok
It has the North's largest chapel royal. The principal Buddha statue is a huge cast mage named Phra Chao Kao Tu. The 14th century temple of Wat Suan Dok is located just west of the old city walls on Suthep road.

6. Doi Suthep
Pui National Park is in the area of Amphoe Mae Rim, Amphoe Hang Dong and Amphoe Muang, covering 262.5 square kilometres. The office of the park is on Doi Suthep route near Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The attractions in the area of the park are:

7. Chiang Mai Zoo
This is near Huai Kaeo Arboretum, 6 kms. from town. It is a big zoo there are more than 2000 kind of animal. Chiang Mai Zoo is the first and only zoo in Northern Thailand where visitors can experience the excitement and intimacy of various species of animals

8. Wat Chedi Luang
This is situated in town. It was built in 1411 A.D. The big Chedi was damaged by an earthquake in 1545 A:D. and has never been restored. Wat Chedi Luang is on Prapokklao Road which runs roughly through the north-south center line of the old city, from Changpuak Gate to Chaing Mai Gate. The temple is just a short walk south of the intersection with the main east-west Ratchadamnoen Road.

1. Doi Luang Chiang Dao
The peak is accessible on foot. At Chiang Dao cave, guides, porters, and chartered transfers to the starting point of the trail are available. Rented local truck costs around 900 baht and, a porter is 300 baht per person. There are no tourist facilities on Chiang Dao Mountain. Visitors must bring their own sleeping bags, food, and water.

2. Chiang Dao Cave (Tham Chiang Dao)
Tham Chiang Dao is a charming cave located in Amphoe Chiang Dao. It is situated 72 kilometres from Chiang Mai town, turn left at the entrance route and proceed for 5 kilometres on an asphalt road. Convenient parking is available. Climb a staircase with a zinc roof to reach the cave. The lovely cave greets visitors with various kinds of fish swimming in a stream in front of the cave.

The lake is located approximately 133 kilometers from Chiang Mai town along the Chiang Mai-Hot-Doi Tao route.

This national park offers a breathtaking view of the natural scenery of a steep river valley amidst scenic mountains and teak forests. It is about 105 kilometers from Chiang Mai town on Highway 108.

1. Doi Ang Khang National Park
Famous for its cool climate all year round, visitors can explore the Royal Angkhang Station Project and visit hill tribe villages to learn more about their daily life. To get there, take Highway No. 107 (Chiang Mai-Fang), turn left at an intersection around Km. 137 (Mae Kha Market) and proceed for another 25 kilometers to Doi Ang Khang. As the route is filled with steep s-curves, an experienced driver and vehicles in good condition is required. The local truck (song taew) from Mae Kha Market offers chartered service to the mountain.

2. Fang Hot Springs
8 kilometers northwest of Fang city. The hot springs originate from simmering granite with temperatures from 90 to 100 degrees Celsius. Most notable is the largest spring which constantly jets out strong sulphur scented steam.

1. Mae Sa Waterfall (Nam tok Mae Sa )
This famous 8-tiered waterfall which is located at Km. 7 along the Mae Rim-Samoeng route is situated in a natural setting among towering trees and has a lovely breeze flowing throughout the year. It is an ideal recreational spot for both residents and visitors.

1. Huai Nam Dang National Park
The park occupies an area of 180 square kilometers in Mae Taeng Sub-district, Chiang Mai and Pai Sub-district, Mae Hong Son Province. The mountain, which is mostly ranged highlands, has verdant forests that are the sources of tributaries and various streams. Notable attractions in the park include Huai Nam Dang Viewpoint and Doi Kiu Lom, which overlooks Doi Chiang Dao. To get there, drive along Mae Malai-Pai Road to between Km. 65-66, and then take a 6-kilometer access road to the park office.

2. Mok Fa Waterfall (Namtok Mok Fa)
This one-level waterfall is located on the Mae Malai-Pai road. To get there, take a left turn at Km. 20 onto a dirt road and proceed for 2 kilometers. The waterfall, which is surrounded with lush green trees, is full of water all year round.
